[HanCinema’s Drama Review] “Our Beloved Summer” Episode 9 (2022/01/06)

The trip out to the country ends abruptly without any explanation. Well, we do get an explanation eventually. At around the seventeen minute mark one minor character explains to another minor character that the reason everyone left the country house was because Woong and Yeon-soo both just ran away. I seem to remember the entire point of taking them to the country house was that they couldn’t easily leave. So much for that.

The framing device of placing Woong and Yeon-soo’s relationship in the context of the documentary continues to create more problems than it solves. It’s also almost always completely irrelevant. Woong and Yeon-soo can and do meet each other on their own without even really trying to. Somewhat counterintuitively, the documentary is more of an excuse for Ji-woong to meet Woong and Yeon-soo, a fact which is even commented on here.

But Ji-woong, as a character, isn’t really any more useful than the documentary itself. His presence as a third wheel actually undermines one of the main compelling aspects of Woong and Yeon-soo’s relationship. He’s their friend. We’re constantly told and shown that Woong and Yeon-soo don’t really have friends. They’re both aloof, for completely different reasons, leading to completely different lifestyles, and are often awkward in their interactions with other characters.

“Our Beloved Summer” has always featured a lot of questionable editing. But this episode had a more unique annoyance for me in that the main relationship is getting repetitive. Woong rejects Yeon-soo, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, despite their dramatic kiss, but agrees to her request to just be friends. Why Woong rejects Yeon-soo, or for that matter agrees to be friends, is left entirely unclear. Presumably we’ll find out next episode- but the way this information is being withheld feels arbitrary. So it’s all going to be some weird misunderstanding.

I’d like to be wrong. The hints we get that Woong might be taking NJ’s cute come-on attempts seriously is interesting. But NJ has existed so far apart from the show’s other characters, and has spoken so little with Woong, that nothing about this twist feels plausible. What’s particularly annoying is that screenwriter Lee Na-eun-I could have easily given them more organic opportunities to talk to each other. Woong and NJ are both celebrities, after all, albeit in completely different subcultures. It’s irritating how despite all of these characters having interesting jobs nothing is ever done with that in the actual story.
