Ten episodes into the drama, NJ is given compelling characterization. It turns out, she really likes real estate. This interpretation had never occurred to me before, because NJ’s interest in purchasing buildings was only ever mentioned in the context of her trying to get close to Woong. But before ever meeting Woong, NJ’s real estate purchases were a matter of celebrity gossip record. She only ever even met Woong because he’s famous mainly for architectural designs, and was at that time doing an exhibition.

Once again, I am bristling with irritation at this drama’s baffling pace of exposition. Until this episode I didn’t even realize that Woong only did drawings of buildings. Our exposure to his art has been so trifling I had just assumed he drew other things too. The long forgotten plagiarism allegation from Noo-ah makes considerably less sense if they’re both architectural artists, since the nuances of such a specific subject would require a much stricter standard than superficial similarities.
In other forgotten plot hooks, Woong started the story out as an anonymous artist, and only exposed his identity to participate in Yeon-soo’s pop-up store project. Woong’s decision seemed flippant at the time- and even more so in light of NJ’s flashback, and new developments in their plotline. Technically Woong is now himself a celebrity, and subject to gossip much as NJ is. The word “technically” is doing a lot of work there. Celebrities not famous for screen presence aren’t generally considered gossip-worthy subjects unless they have very active social media accounts.
Screenwriter Lee Na-eun-I has this weirdly obsessive need to victimize NJ, and it shows in the malicious comments storyline. This annoyed me before, as I know a fair amount on this subject being a celebrity reporter myself. But even beyond the factual accuracy, this is a really contrived way to drive pity for NJ’s character that’s genuinely annoying. NJ is a lonely young woman with no friends, a love for architecture, and a sensitivity for any negative comments whatsoever.
That’s compelling on its own without having to make NJ’s anonymous commenters out to be heartless monsters. “Our Beloved Summer” is just filled with so many weird, pointless creative decisions like this. In other bizarre plot twists, we also find out that apparently nearly all of the action in this drama takes place in the same small neighborhood. This information is remarkable mainly because it beggars disbelief that this hadn’t come up earlier.
