A civic group submitted an injunction to the court on the 22nd asking for a ban on the drama “Snowdrop”, amid criticism that this JTBC weekend drama set in Seoul in 1987, is allegedly disparaging the democratization movement at the time by bringing up a southern spy pretending to be an activist.

The civic group’s World Citizens’ Declaration held a press conference in front of the Seoul Western District Court in Mapo-gu, Seoul, and said, “This drama glorifies the old national security agency’s attitude by portraying employees of the former Ministry of National Security who tortured and murdered numerous democratization figures for no reason”.
The drama, which first aired on the 18th, tells the love story of a female college student Yeong-ro (Jisoo) and Soo-ho (Jung Hae-in), who jumps into a women’s college dormitory after being injured. Yeong-ro, who mistakes southern spy Soo-ho for a graduate student and hides him, as he is being chased by an agent of national security. As a result, criticism was raised that it could justify the violence of the military regime, which tortured activist figures by falsely accusing them of espionage during the democratization movement.
The World Citizens’ Declaration said, “It is a clear insult to the past history of Korea, which faced military dictatorships”, adding, “In particular, this concern is aggravated in that the work can be distributed around the world through online video service (OTT)”.
They added, “We strongly hope that the court will stop broadcasting and insulting citizens (by military dictatorship) and give society a message that state violence is no longer acceptable. Therefore, we are citing an injunction to ban the airing of snow”.
As the controversy grew, JTBC said in a statement released the previous day, “Snowdrop” is a creation that shows the personal narratives of those who were used and sacrificed by powerful people. Most misunderstandings will be resolved in the future.
